v.arc - Valand Artistic Research Centre

Fine Art Research at Valand is being conducted under the umbrella of v.arc – Valand Artistic Research Centre. This is in itself a strategy to recognize the importance of practice-led research in which the focus is on individual art practice and the methodologies that lie within the practice, the project and/or in related research fields.

In order to conduct this experiment v.arc embraces the artistic research of academics, PhD researchers, and research fellows in dialogue with visiting artists and artists in residence. The aim is to engage in discussions on artistic research where its impact is most clearly discernable in the artwork, the art methodology and the art process. Critical theory is embraced for insight and inspiration rather than for the purpose of pure analysis. Methodologies are contextualized within a variety of disciplines acknowledging the cross-disciplinary nature of contemporary fine art practice.

v.arc - a hub for academics and artists to critically engage in research through art practice

The ethos of v.arc is to support artistic research and to create an open and accessible research culture rooted in Fine Art. v.arc supports artist researchers from different fields and backgrounds (academic/non-academic) to facilitate international and inter-cultural exchange and to engage as many Valand staff and students as is constructively possible in dialogue with invited artists and their research/artworks.

v.arc is a hub for academics and artists to critically engage in research through art practice.

v.arc provides the key meeting point for research in visual arts, contemporary art practice and theory within the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, as well as connecting to other faculties within the University of Gothenburg and institutions in the city of Gothenburg.

v.arc provides a context for interdisciplinary conferences, seminars, lectures, fellowships and residencies.

v.arc plays an important role in testing cultural structures and the boundaries of contemporary art practice by acting as a ‘contact zone’ for art practice within and outside of academia.

v.arc initiates and supports national and international collaborative partnerships attracting funding both internally and externally.
